Ahh the coming-of-age teen comedy movie…such a staple of Hollywood, and still thoroughly enjoyable. These movies are perfect for a couple hours of mindless entertainment and laughter, and these days no one is doing it better than Michael Cera.
The young Ontario native found success in the hit Fox TV series Arrested Development, but he truly hit it big in 2007’s Superbad. It was a film designed not for the Academy Awards, but for the audiences - to deliver great humor, scene after scene. Boy did it succeed. On a production budget of under $18 million, the movie managed to rake in a combined $304 million in box office receipts and DVD sales.
Now it looks like Cera may have another comedic hit ready to launch. Youth in Revolt appears to be a somewhat stereotypical coming-of-age teen comedy on the surface, but a quick glance at the cast will tell you this one has true potential. Alongside Cera is Justin Long (He’s Just Not That Into You), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Steve Buscemi (Fargo), Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) and relative newcomer Portia Doubleday.
Sometimes an all-star comedic cast like this doesn’t blend like the director envisions…but take a look at the trailer and form your own opinions. The movie hits theaters January 8, 2010.
Synopsis: Youth in Revolt is the story of Nick Twisp a unique, but affable teen with a taste for the finer things in life like Sinatra and Fellini who falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful, free-spirited Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday) while on a family vacation. But family, geography and jealous ex-lovers conspire to keep these two apart. With Sheenis encouragement, Nick abandons his dull, predictable life and develops a rebellious alter ego: Francois. With his ascot, his moustache and his cigarette, Francois will stop at nothing to be with Sheeni, and leads Nick Twisp on a path of destruction with unpredictable and uproarious consequences.
