Splice is directed by Vincenzo Natali and stars Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead). The hybrid creature you see in the pictures is Dren, and is played by Abigail Chu and Delphine Chanéac.
Here’s what Natali had to say about the film: “Splice is a serious film and an emotional one. And there’s sex… Very unconventional sex. The centerpiece of the movie is a creature which goes through a dramatic evolutionary process. The goal is to create something shocking but also very subtle and completely believable.” Hmm….
Alien sex…As I recall, Species was only successful due to the beauty of Natasha Henstridge. Dren looks very interesting, but not attractive. Splice will hopefully focus minimally on the inter-species coitus and spend more time on Polley and Brody as geneticists. The movie comes out January 14, 2010.
Synopsis: Clive and Elsa are superstars of the genetic engineering world. They specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create fantastical new hybrids. The charismatic couple wants to use human DNA in a new hybrid something that could yield astronomical medical benefits. The pharmaceutical company that funds their research, however, is more interested in exploiting their earlier triumphs for easier, short-term profit. Clive and Elsa secretly conduct their own experiment. The result is Dren: an amazing creature who exhibits an array of unexpected developments, both physical and intellectual. Dren exceeds their wildest dreams… and, ultimately, their most terrifying nightmare.
