Forbes released a list yesterday of their 10 most overpaid Hollywood stars. Their findings are based on how much the actor was paid versus the return on investment of the film. For example, if a film earned $100 million, and the actor was paid $15 million, then the actor would have earned the studio $6.67 for every dollar he or she was paid.
Will Ferrell was the worst. According to the Forbes findings, his films earned an average of $3.29 for every dollar he was paid. Ferrell got his break on Saturday Night Live and managed to turn that into a real career. Films like Elf and Talladega Nights were fairly successful, but 2009’s Land of the Lost didn’t cracked $50 million domestically, on a $100 million budget.
Ewan McGregor (whom I thought was brilliant in Moulin Rouge and Trainspotting) finished right behind Ferrell with his films earning $3.75 for every dollar he was paid. His new movie The Men Who Stare At Goats is in theaters right now, but so far it’s grossed a meager $27 million on a $24 million budget.
Drew Barrymore was the only female actor on the list, with her films bringing in $7.43 for every dollar she was paid - good for seventh on the list. Visit Forbes for the rest of the list.
For a little perspective, Forbes also makes a list of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. Shia LaBeouf topped that list and brought in $160 for every dollar he earned while James McAvoy was second and (Wanted, Atonement) generated $114 for each dollar he was paid.
