New Moon Surpasses Dark Knight for Opening Day Record

New Moon Stars Pattinson, Lautner, Stewart

No sooner do we hear that The Twilight Saga: New Moon set a midnight box office record than the news of the full opening day results hits. Twilight fans have hit the theaters in record numbers on opening day, blasting the record set by The Dark Knight out of the water. According to Summit Entertainment, New Moon grossed an estimated $72.7 million on Friday. The previous record was $67 million, held by 2007’s Dark Knight.

Does New Moon have the staying power to tackle The Dark Knight’s 3-day record of $158 million? Considering the sheer number New Moon has already reached in just 24 hours, and the hunger of Twilighters to watch Bella, Edward and Jacob repeatedly, I wouldn’t be surprised if New Moon continues to set records!
