Rooms Scarce for Commission Junction University

July 20th, 2007

I just went to book a room at the Fess Parker Hotel in Santa Barbara for Commission Junction University (CJU) and they only had openings for one night not the two nights I desired. They were kind enough to send me to the Santa Barbara Inn which is only a block away. I called and got a $309 rate over the phone. I went to trusty Hotels.com and got the same room for $279 a night. The net saves me another $60. That will help me with my bar tab!
Should be fun at CJU this year, though rumor has it that this may be the last year in SB since the program is outgrowing friendly California. Please not Las Vegas.

How about Vail, Colorado. In the fall rooms are plentiful and cheap. You can now fly into Eagle airport which is s short drive to Vail. The restaurants serve great food 50% off since it iin the shoulder season. And the weather is sublime. Hey, that’s why I live here. And if CJ comes to Vail, I’ll throw a great backyard BBQ.

Affiliate Summit 2007 East- Early Review

July 11th, 2007

Just back from Miami and the well attended Affiliate Summit. After going to Commission Junction University, the LinkShare Symposium and Webmaster World, in the realm of affiliates: Affiliate Summit is tops. I think it is partly due to no one company governs the activity at Affiliate Summit and that the ideas are easily shared and the networking was open and plentiful as a result.

The breakout sessions were really great and many times people actually left the bar to attend them.

Of note was a session that included Randy Almond from Walmart.com, Jake Bailey from Overstock, Anthony Bajoras from move marketing, Paul Nichols from eBates and it was narrated by Keri Pollard of CJ. Randy and Jake gave the best description of well balanced programs for PPC affiliates I have yet to hear. Hopefully the video will get posted soon and I’ll add the link in a future post.

The last session on the last day, though not well attended, featured Scott Polk, head of SEO for Edmunds.com, Todd Henley of SiteLead (a PPC affiliate) and Brook Schaaf of Schaaf Consulting- an OPM for 10 affiliate programs. They went up and down the scale of how to work with affiliates, SEO and PPC in nature. Great insights and intelligently presented from all sides. Included in the discussions were stories of PPC affiliates taking over as the PPC “team”, supplanting a both agencies and in-house groups for some merchants. I didn’t make this up as I talked to numerous PPC affiliates that are being approached to manage PPC programs for merchants.

And as if I am not stirring up even more of a hornets nest, I received this from Commission Junction today:

“Dear Advertiser

CJ recently was quoted in Direct Magazine discussing the synergies between Search and Affiliate marketing, and how greater revenues can be achieved through implementing the right practices. I thought you may appreciate viewing the CJ Quote below.

“Lisa Crossley Hunter, director of CJ Search, the search marketing arm of Commission Junction, opted to apply some data to the questions under discussion, and particularly to the problem of whether running both affiliate marketing and search marketing programs side-by-side will inevitably lead to channel conflicts and increase a marketer’s cost per acquisition (CPA).

She highlighted an unnamed multi- million dollar retail client of CJ Search that began search marketing in January 2004 with a CPA of $9.80. When that client opened up an affiliate channel in July 2005, Hunter said, its CPA went down to $9.62. And by the end of 2006, with both channels running, the client’s CPA was down to $6.71 and had dropped for six consecutive quarters. Meanwhile, revenue from search went from $1.2 million in 2005 to $2.9 million in 2006, while additional revenue from affiliates reached $2.7 million last year, for a total increase in annual revenue of $5.6 million. “They saw more than four times revenue growth between 2005 and 2006,” she said. “So if they had dropped one of those channels, they would have lost millions of dollars in revenue.”

The key to this client’s success in blending search and affiliate marketing was a set of well-defined guidelines, Hunter said.”

Good information and good people made for a great 3 day event. Thanks again Todd!

Beauty Trends Upgrades the Look and Feel Website to Enhance user Experience

March 27th, 2007

BeautyTrends.com has always had a tremendous EPC with its affiliate marketing program with Commission Junction. The last few months has seen significant upgrades in the user experience in two closely related areas: ecommerce and the design of the site (look and feel). The ecommerce upgrade was completed in December 2006 and continues to maintain the EPC as before, this is indeed a significant accomplishment. Now the site has been redesigned with the look and feel now being carried into their already excellent newsletter format (as shown below). Great job Beauty Trends!

SmugMug’s (Commission Junction Advertiser) Future Lauded by TechCrunch

January 22nd, 2007

SmugMug is a company I met at Commission Junction University. Markham Bennett was the Affiliate Manager and being 6′7″ tall stood out in the crowd. Being only slightly shorter myself, we had a natural affinity. Palling around with Markham and Mike Allen of Shopping-Bargains.com led to a podcast we did together and posted on Affiliate News review on MediaSwamp.com (to hear the podcast, click here). Today TechCrunch sent out an excellent report on SmugMug’s progress and I thought I’d share it with you.

SmugMug: The (Anti) Web 2.0 Company

Posted: 22 Jan 2007 04:38 AM CST

SmugMug CEO Dan MacAskill, who has said “maybe I just don’t get this ‘Web 2.0′ term” in the past, is proceeding to teach those of us who claim to know exactly what it means a thing or two. The company launched a suite of stunning new features tonight.SmugMug, which took its first customers in late 2002, is the go-to service for serious photography nuts. 100,000 paying customers have uploaded over 100 million photos. The company has 19 employees, is profitable, and has never taken outside funding. Revenues are in the $10 million per year range, MacAskill tells me.

Beauty Trends Extends Relationship with eAccountable for Commission Junction Affiliate Management

January 12th, 2007

This is an email alert I sent to all of the affiliates I manage for Beauty Trends (www.beautytrends.com). I hope you don’t mind if I use it as a segue into an announcement about my company eaccountable. I have been managing this program for them for over 6 years. The Beauty Trends website was sold late last year by Tress Allure to a company based in St. Louis and they have continued to retain my company (eAccountable Marketing Services, http://www.eaccountable.com) to manage the program. Even better, they have asked me to grow the program as well this year with new affiliate offers, the addition of other affiliate networks to the mix and new and better advertising to attract affiliates as well as consumers. So look forward more exciting news and additions to BeautyTrends.com

Apologies for tracking problems with CJ Affiliates

We apologize for the lack of numbers on sales from the 26th of December until the 9th of January. We updated our ecommerce application and had technical issues regarding the reinstallation of the CJ tracking code.

All is fixed now!

We’ll soon be back to our 7 day EPC’s in the $50-$60 range were we were all of 2006.
